European countries have displayed a tremendous willingness to meet their targets during the ongoing clean energy transition. Countries and continents are adopting different strategies as they are aiming to execute as many clean energy projects as they need to. The European continent as a whole has displayed togetherness and a willingness to assist each other to meet the continent’s targets. Additionally, European nations are not overly picky about where the projects emerge, which explains why OX2 was approved to enhance a Swedish renewable energy project with a 209 MWh battery storage system integrated into its wind farm.

Reviewing OX2 as an established leader in clean energy projects

Each continent is going to need a variety of companies that are viewed as pioneers and leaders in clean energy projects as they aim to reach set targets. OX2 is a well-respected major European and Australian renewable energy developer that is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

The company was founded in 2004 and specializes in turnkey solutions for onshore and offshore wind, solar power, battery energy storage systems, and hydrogen initiatives. It operates in different areas of the project, from development and construction to asset management.

The company has a global presence in nine markets across Europe and in Australia. It is viewed as a massive economic asset in those regions as it employs a total of 500 people. OX2 started off as a developer before moving to become an independent power producer and manager of renewable assets for other investors and operators.

OX2 left the entire energy industry captivated after taking the investment decision to start construction of a battery energy storage facility with a capacity of 50 MW/209 MWh adjacent to the Fageråsen wind farm in the municipality of Malung-Salen. Battery energy storage systems have gained popularity in the energy industry because they allow developers to ensure consistent energy availability.

Solar and wind energy facilities have faced criticism for their vulnerability to intermittency issues. Still, developers have now found battery energy storage systems to be the ideal solution to this challenge. In this instance, the investment is part of the company’s long-term commitment and ownership strategy in the area. In March, OX2 revealed an investment of roughly SEK 3 billion in the Fageråsen wind farm.

This will be the first wind farm that OX2 is set to own in Sweden upon completion. OX2 is also expected to have ownership of the energy storage facility as part of its growing portfolio. Scientists mapped every onshore wind turbine on Earth and discovered the global wind boom was much bigger than anyone realized.  Matthias Taft, CEO of OX2 AB, stated the following:

“The energy storage together with the Fageråsen wind farm, strengthens our presence in the Swedish market and adds to our portfolio with solutions for electrification. The combination of wind and energy storage enables better alignment of production with demand and ensures more efficient use of the electricity generated.”

An assessment of Sweden’s growing clean energy landscape as of 2026

Sweden’s wind energy landscape is continuously growing, with wind generating over 40 TWh annually and representing a huge share of the country’s fossil-free grid. Even with this amount of progress, the sector is still prone to a complex regulatory environment, with local municipal vetoes blocking many onshore projects and national defense concerns.

Looking ahead: What are OX2’s plans to progress the wind sector?

According to reports, OX2 secured financing for the energy storage facility with DNB and UniCredit through an extension of the commitments already made for the Fageråsen wind farm in February 2026.

The company signed a supply agreement for the battery energy storage system with Trina Solar. Ultimately, the agreement is a reflection of a massive milestone in the procurement process.

Construction of the battery energy storage facility will commence during the summer and is expected to be commissioned at the end of 2027. The Swedish Wind Energy Association forecasts wind generation to reach 55 TWh, accounting for about 28% of total electricity production.
