RES and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) signed an asset management contract on October 22 for the 392 MW Peștera II wind farm near Constanța, in southeast Romania. The agreement covers the project from its current construction phase through to commercial operations, targeted for 2028.

RES and CIP formalize asset management agreement for Peștera II

Signed on October 22, the contract puts RES in charge of overseeing Peștera II through the rest of construction and into full commercial operation — currently targeted for 2028.

RES’s Romanian team will work alongside CIP to set the project up for strong long-term performance from day one. The scope covers both the technical and commercial sides of running a large-scale wind asset: compliance, performance tracking, energy production maximization, and asset life extension — essentially everything that determines whether a wind farm delivers on its promise over decades.

Once the wind farm reaches commercial operations, it’s projected to generate enough clean electricity to power more than 500,000 Romanian homes each year.

Peștera II sits near Constanța, in southeast Romania — the same city where RES has kept its Romanian headquarters since entering the market in 2015. That local presence matters when you’re managing a project of this scale.

Why CIP selected RES to manage the Romanian project

RES brings a combination of local familiarity and global scale that’s tough to replicate. The company has been active in Romania for a decade, so its team knows the regulatory environment, the grid dynamics, and the operational realities of the region firsthand.

RES manages more than 15 GW of renewable assets across 14 countries — a breadth that gives clients like CIP confidence it can handle complexity and keep service quality consistent wherever the assets happen to be. Round-the-clock monitoring is central to that. RES runs 24/7 control centers in Glasgow, Albacete, and Denver, continuously tracking asset performance for owners worldwide, helping clients stay on top of compliance while keeping availability high and costs in check.

According to Niels Holst, Partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, RES’s “proven approach to getting new wind farms ready for operation” was a key factor in the decision. That capability — taking a project from construction site to generating asset — is exactly what CIP needs at this stage of Peștera II’s development.

Expected output and contribution to Romania’s clean energy supply

Once the wind farm reaches commercial operations, it’s projected to generate enough clean electricity to power more than 500,000 Romanian homes each year.

Holst described Romania as having “an important role to play in Europe’s energy transition.” At 392 MW, Peștera II is a significant piece of that puzzle, adding clean capacity to a region that keeps attracting major institutional investment in energy infrastructure. The project fits into the broader European push to cut dependence on fossil fuels, and Romania’s wind resources — especially in the southeast — make it a logical location for development at this scale.

Contract fits into RES’s broader European asset management expansion

The Peștera II deal isn’t a standalone win. It’s the latest in a series of asset management contracts RES has secured across Europe in 2025, following agreements in Greece, Belgium, Lithuania, and Italy earlier in the year.

It also builds on an already active relationship between RES and CIP. In July 2025, RES was appointed asset manager for CIP’s Coalburn I Battery Energy Storage System in South Lanarkshire, Scotland — a 500 MW/1 GWh project described as one of the largest battery storage projects in Europe. That cross-market collaboration points to a deepening partnership rather than a one-off arrangement. For RES, each new contract adds to a growing European footprint in asset management. For CIP, working with a single trusted provider across multiple projects and geographies creates operational consistency that’s hard to put a price on.

Juan Gutiérrez, CEO of Services at RES, put it plainly: “Our growing partnership with CIP is focused on maximizing the return from high-quality assets over their full lifetime.”

Background: RES and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners at a glance

RES describes itself as the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, operating across 24 countries in wind, solar, energy storage, green hydrogen, and grid infrastructure. To date, the company has delivered more than 29 GW of renewable energy projects globally.

Beyond development, RES supports 45 GW of renewable assets through asset management, operations and maintenance, and spare parts services — making it one of the largest service providers in the sector.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners was founded in 2012 and has grown into a leading global fund manager focused on energy infrastructure. It currently manages 15 funds and has raised approximately EUR 43 billion from more than 200 institutional investors, with projects spanning more than 30 countries across power generation, energy storage, transmission, advanced bioenergy, low-carbon fuels, and carbon capture.

What the Peștera II contract means in practice

The agreement puts RES at the center of one of Romania’s most significant wind energy projects. Starting now, during construction, RES will work to ensure Peștera II is technically and commercially ready when it starts generating power — expected in 2028.

Once operational, the 392 MW project will supply clean electricity to more than 500,000 homes annually, contributing to Romania’s energy goals and Europe’s wider move away from fossil fuels. For RES, the contract reinforces its position as a go-to asset manager for large-scale renewables across the continent. For CIP, it adds another layer of operational confidence to a project that carries real weight in the region’s clean energy future.
