This has become especially true in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which recently awarded the rights to the 1.5 GW Dawadmi wind project to a South Korean energy company.
Saudi Arabia is fostering a new era of clean energy production
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has become one of the richest nations in the world thanks to its substantial natural energy resources that have powered the international energy sector for decades now. Not that long ago, the Kingdom was a nation consumed by the desert with tiny fishing villages, what a change that time and a few investments in energy resources can make.
The Kingdom has recently unveiled a new strategy to advance the use and production of clean energy resources amid the overwhelming calls to end the reliance on conventional oil and gas. The Kingdom recently awarded the rights for a new and potentially record-breaking wind project near Riyadh to a South Korean developer called Ming Yang.
Ming Yang will be responsible for developing the latest wind energy project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Under the latest round of tender allocations under the government of Saudi Arabia, Ming Yang has been awarded the rights to develop the new SPPC R6 DWD Wind Project, which is located in the Dawadmi area of Riyadh Province. The South Korean developer was awarded the 1500MW contract from the Emirates Utility Development Company, paving the way for Saudi Arabia to continue its energy transformation.
The Dawadmi Wind Energy Project is a record-setting project for Saudi Arabia
The project has been attracting the attention of the international energy market as it is one of the cheapest renewable energy projects currently being planned anywhere in the world. The Dawadmi Wind Energy Project will make use of 142 turbines that were specifically designed for use in regions such as the desert nation of Saudi Arabia.
The project set a world record for its astonishingly low LCOE, which Ming Yang claims is approximately 1.33803 cent/kWh. The project is mainly being developed by Ming Yang, but will leverage the expertise and know-how of the other partners in the wind project, which are:
- Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)
- Nesma Renewable Energy Company Ltd
- Etihad Water and Electricity Company PJSC (EtihadWE)
As the United States has been vetoing new wind projects, the rest of the world has been developing investment frameworks that promote the use and production of clean energy. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is aiming to revolutionize its energy sector and achieve a target of 50% of its energy output coming from the renewable energy market by the end of the decade.
The world will need more nations that previously relied on energy output from the gas and oil sectors to reconfigure their sectors to attract more clean energy production if they are to meet mandated clean energy targets.
The new contract awarded to Ming Yang is only the first in a long line of clean energy projects
The Kingdom has noted that the contract to develop the wind energy project is only the latest step in a long walk to energy freedom for a nation that has been actively attempting to change its image on the global stage. Europe’s proclivity for wind projects has been a step in the right direction to end the overwhelming dominance of the oil and gas market, but Saudi Arabia has much deeper pockets and has the resources to become one of the major drivers in the revolution of the energy sector.
