A Critical Mineral at a Critical Moment: The Importance of Restoring Domestic Tungsten Production in the U.S.

The International Best Business Awards ceremony celebrated top entrepreneurs and specialists worldwide. The key players in this competition were none other than the industrialists, showing how the oil and gas industry continues to forge ahead, leading the planet with its innovations and advancements. Sergei Shlykov, a leading figure in the oil and gas industry and the recipient of the Best Business Award for Best Top Manager in industrial construction within the oil and gas sector, shared his insights on achieving excellence in the field.

Early Career

Sergei Shlykov, Director of Construction and International Development at SANDS company, exemplifies outstanding expertise and leadership in this competitive sector. He is an exceptional engineer who inherited his family’s legacy of engineering excellence.

Right after graduating from State Technological University in 2007, Sergei started working on a significant international project, the Southern Khylchuy, involving ConocoPhillips, the USA, and Lukoil, Russia. This project entailed braving the harsh extremities of the Far North. Sergei’s performance was outstanding. “After this work, I was offered a position as the engineer in charge of this project at the Research and Design Institute. Based on technical specifications, I conducted calculations and designed over 20 units of storage equipment (separators) and extraction columns.” This transition proved Sergei’s expertise and talent in navigating challenging environments and delivering exceptional results on a global scale.

Learning as fast as the world is changing

Upon graduating from the University, having passed the state exam with the highest score in 2007, Sergei did not rest on his academic achievements.  He says, “I have been learning throughout my entire professional career.” This commitment to growth is also reflected in Sergei’s career trajectory. Very soon, Sergei took on more expansive responsibilities, leading major national and international projects as the Head of Department and later advancing to the position of Deputy General Director.

Over the course of several years, Sergei successfully managed multiple large-scale endeavors. These included overseeing the reconstruction of the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant, spearheading the refurbishment and expansion of the Ilsky Oil Refinery, and directing the construction of the groundbreaking “Turkish Stream” gas pipeline. As the Deputy General Director of the KNGK group of companies, Sergei played a major role in developing and constructing 11 compressor station facilities known as “Russkaya.”

Sergei’s dedication to ongoing professional development highlights his commitment to staying at the forefront of his field. By pursuing a Master’s degree in Engineering Management in Australia, he is expanding his knowledge and skills to lead and manage engineering projects effectively from a global perspective. Additionally, his possession of the APEC Engineering certification further demonstrates his expertise in engineering, opening up opportunities for recognition in various countries, including the United States.

Innovations

This knowledge has certainly contributed to enhancing his work. In the midst of the environmental crisis and the push to slash carbon footprints from oil refineries, Sergei has been in charge of revamping oil plants for over a decade. He’s been transitioning these facilities to eco-friendly equipment that’s energy-efficient and easy on the environment. Sergei declares, “I am glad that I have the opportunity to make a personal contribution to reducing emissions into the environment by reconstructing outdated equipment and replacing it with more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. The world cannot completely abandon the oil and gas industry, but we can already minimize the harm.”

His approach involves state-of-the-art wastewater treatment systems, top-notch gas capture units, and specialized internal flare systems, all geared towards keeping harmful emissions at bay and safeguarding our surroundings.

Sergei’s work isn’t just about curbing emissions – it’s also about boosting energy efficiency. In the course of working on increasing the energy efficiency of industrial buildings, Sergei Shlykov developed and certified a methodological guide on the use of lightweight steel structures and their energy efficiency. His author’s guide is certified within the Eurasian Union framework and distributed in five states.

By introducing light metal structures as a key component in building construction, Sergei has revolutionized the industry with a unique frame technology. Using galvanized steel with a combination of perforated and non-perforated profiles helps ensure structural integrity and maximize energy efficiency. The lightweight nature of these metal structures offers significant benefits, including a remarkable reduction in energy consumption for heating purposes. Buildings constructed with light metal structures exhibit impressive seismic resistance capabilities. These structures can withstand high wind loads of up to 161 miles per hour and withstand strong earthquakes measuring up to 9 on the Richter scale. This resilience is vital in regions prone to natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes. Moreover, the lightweight nature of these structures allows for simpler foundation designs, reducing concrete consumption by 50-80% and decreasing labor costs by 40-70%.

The American government’s focus on promoting energy-efficient construction practices and upgrading outdated industrial facilities aligns well with sustainable and environmentally friendly construction principles. Projects like Sergei Shlykov’s innovative approach are particularly relevant in the United States, where many states face regular exposure to natural disasters and severe weather events, highlighting the importance of resilient and eco-conscious building solutions.

Natural Success

Under Sergei’s guidance, the reconstruction and expansion of various plants have generated over 1,000 employment opportunities and facilitated the provision of gas to remote settlements within the country and abroad. His projects and recommendations within the expert group for updating construction standards have been incorporated into legislative initiatives that impact the entire construction sector of the nation.

Sergei Shlykov’s significant contributions to the industry and successful leadership of major international projects have been consistently recognized and honored by professional communities and awarded international accolades.

In 2015, he received a Gazprom commendation letter for his successful Turkish Stream (Southern Stream) project work. Furthermore, in 2022, he was recognized by the National Association of Builders, the largest professional association in Russia, as one of the top five individuals annually acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to the industry.

Additionally, in 2022, Shlykov was honored with the Governor’s Award for his remarkable contribution to the industry. In 2023, he received the Best Business Award in the category of Best Top Manager for industrial construction in the oil and gas industry.

All these prestigious awards have been attributed to Shlykov’s outstanding leadership and successful execution of national and international projects within the oil and gas industry’s industrial construction sector.
