Living larger than life becomes the embodiment of Chinese character after 7,000,000 solar panels aligned in China. The scale of this project is seven times the size of Manhattan and will be even larger in 2026. Additionally, this gigantic project is only one-third of an even greater, diversified project, all aiming to expand the country’s renewable capacity and maintain its position as a global leader in the renewable energy sector. Find out more about the substantial solar project below.

Solar capacity larger than life

China is a worldwide leader in renewable energies. However, the country’s commitment is not simply driven by its climate goals, which are to achieve zero-carbon by 2060, but also by the fact that it has no other choice, as its ever-rising energy demands must be met. According to a Dialogue Earth report, China is one of the planet’s greatest energy consumers.

Part of the country’s primary climate goals is to achieve peak emissions by 2030, which it certainly will achieve, considering its growing energy demand. According to Ember’s data, the energy consumption per person is approximately 7,289 kWh. The country’s substantial demand can be attributed to:

  • Swift electrification expansions, including
    • AI data centers, industrial and residential heat pumps, and EVs
    • The charging demand of EVs is expected to increase substantially

Fortunately, while fossil fuels (coal in particular) still accounted for 52% of the country’s energy supply, China’s use of fossil fuels is declining as a result of the expansion of its total renewable energy capacity. As 7,000,000 solar panels aligned in China, its plans to achieve its climate goals also align.

7,000,000 solar panels aligned in China

China has declared plans to push its total installed solar and wind capacity to 3,600 GW. While it may sound ambitious, it is not impossible, especially considering China’s gigantic solar farm situated on the Tibetan Plateau. The solar farm is known as the Talatan Solar Park, and will reportedly form part of an even greater and expanding renewable energy hub.

Talatan Solar Park stands out from other similar projects. Firstly, the entire project is developed in a single phase by Powerchina Hebei Electric Power Engineering and Datang Qinghai Energy Development. Secondly, this project is larger than one would think, as experts describe the entire solar farm to be seven times the size of Manhattan, and it is expected to be even bigger in 2026.

7 times the size of Manhattan, and even bigger in 2026

The 162-square-mile project comprises 7,000,000 solar panels to produce clean solar power in Qinghai Province’s Gonghe County. According to a report by Newsweek, the solar farm’s power output is enough to provide electricity for 5,000,000 households. However, Talantan Solar Park is part of a greater hybrid project, and supplemented by nearby wind farms with a total capacity of 4,700 MW and hydroelectric dams with a total capacity of 7,380 MW.

The solar park itself reportedly will be ready to start commercial operations in 2026 and will continue to expand, perhaps even to ten times the size of Manhattan. The combined diverse energy project is expected to transmit the produced electricity over 1,000 miles to city centers via high-voltage lines. China’s most energy-intensive data centers and AI infrastructure will significantly benefit from the clean and cost-effective power.

As China continues to expand its total installed renewable energy capacity, it steadily moves one step closer to achieving its climate goals, and may even achieve them much faster. Not only does the Talatan Solar Park generate additional clean solar power, but it also boosts the local economy thanks to integrating ‘photovoltaic sheep’ farming. These sheep keep vegetation in control while simultaneously improving the soil, and have even led to a new mutton brand. China also showcased its concentrated blazing energy in the desert, showing that the Chinese are indeed living larger than life.
