How an insect turns a post into a hot spot
A paper wasp does not manufacture anything. It chews fibrous plant material, mixes it with saliva and spreads the pulp into a shell.
Every scrap of that shell was somewhere else first, which makes a nest an accidental sample of the ground within the insect’s foraging range.
That range is short. A few hundred yards is the usual working radius, which puts a hard boundary on where the material could have come from.
So the wasp nest did not become radioactive by accident or by a release. It was built out of material that was already contaminated.
The reading was beta and gamma activity at around 100,000 disintegrations a minute across a hand sized area of the shell.
The nest is a collection device that nobody meant to deploy.
What sits under that yard
The tank farm holds underground carbon steel tanks built to store the liquid left over from separating plutonium, and they are large.
The vessels run roughly 80 to 100 feet across and about 42 feet deep, and the biggest hold over a million gallons apiece.
The site opened in the early 1950s to make material for weapons, and it has been a cleanup project far longer than it was a production plant.
It generated something over 165 million gallons of liquid waste across its working life, since reduced to about 34 million gallons by evaporation.
Of the tanks across the complex, more than forty remain and a handful have been closed and grouted.
The cleanup is funded into the 2060s, which is the honest timeline.
The tally, and what the report chose to say
The first nest was found on the third of July on a stanchion beside one tank, and the report on it was filed nineteen days later.
By the end of that month three more had turned up during routine work, all inside the same tank farm, all sprayed and surveyed.
The three later nests carried far less activity than the first, well under one percent of the natural background dose a person absorbs in a year.
The federal report attributes the contamination to legacy material on the grounds rather than to any loss of control from a tank.
The surrounding soil surveyed clean, and the site operator stated that the nests posed no risk to workers, the public or the environment.
Ten times a posting threshold sounds alarming and describes a very small quantity.
The sentence the report never wrote
Here is the gap. The report records the reading, the location and the disposal, and it does not record what the nest was made of or which species built it.
That omission matters more than it looks. A chewed fiber nest points at plant material somewhere in the yard. A mud nest would point at soil instead.
Those two answers implicate different histories, different spill records and different cleanup priorities within the same fenced area.
A watchdog director said plainly that the site had not explained where the material came from or whether a tank was involved, and that is a fair complaint about a document rather than an accusation.
What the coverage often skipped is that the contamination source remains unlocated, and nobody has said otherwise.
Legacy sites keep producing questions long after the reactors stop, as at a Palisades handover built around decommissioning.

What this adds to a very long ledger
Nothing about four nests changes the scale of the problem, and the scale is the story.
Roughly 34 million gallons of liquid waste sit at this one site, part of a national inventory measured in tens of millions more.
Tank waste is the hardest part of the entire American cleanup effort, because it cannot be cooled and walked away from the way a reactor can.
Against that, four insect nests are a footnote, and the footnote has not been fully closed.
The industry is meanwhile building new fuel, which is why a first approval for a new fabrication route matters to the same ledger.
The tank counts and the watchdog reaction are reported by a national broadcaster.
