Williams puts forward plan to expand storage capacity at the Pine Prairie Energy Center

While gas storage projects do not typically receive much attention at the time they are first proposed, their potential to help meet increased demand becomes very apparent when there are spikes in demand and/or tightness in the market. This thinking lies behind Williams’ decision to expand the storage capabilities of the Pine Prairie Energy Center in Louisiana, which illustrates how the need for storage is becoming a top concern for system reliability, versus being a secondary consideration.

Building on an existing asset: Exactly how much gas can be stored?

Williams has requested permission to add a new salt cavern (a sixth) to the existing Pine Prairie Energy Center; this is an underground natural gas storage facility located in Evangeline Parish, Louisiana.

The added cavern would allow for additional storage of approximately 10 billion cubic feet of gas and continue to position the facility as a key component of the Gulf Coast energy infrastructure.

The Pine Prairie Energy Center currently operates as a multi-caverned storage facility with connections to several major interstate pipelines, including Williams’ Transco system. Therefore, the expansion of the Pine Prairie Energy Center is primarily intended to capitalize on existing infrastructure and expand storage capabilities and operational flexibility while utilizing the existing footprint.

Optimizing assets instead of pursuing new land development

The proposed expansion represents a larger trend in the natural gas industry where companies look to optimize existing assets to create greater value rather than pursue greenfield developments.

What the expansion entails in detail

  • The proposed project, known as the Pine Prairie Energy Center Phase IV Expansion, has been placed under the purview of the U.S. Department of Energy/Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
  • In August 2025, Pine Prairie Energy Center, LLC submitted an application to FERC requesting permission to construct and operate the additional storage cavern and associated facilities.
  • In addition to the new cavern, the project includes connecting the new cavern to other pipelines; installing additional compressors; and building supporting infrastructure to allow the added storage to interact with the rest of the system.
  • FERC has begun to prepare an environmental assessment, and timelines for the review of the project will ultimately determine whether and how the project proceeds.

At this point, the proposal does not necessarily indicate that the project will be constructed, it will transition the expansion from conceptualization to evaluation.

Why the expansion of gas storage matters today

Demand for natural gas is becoming more variable due to changes in electric generating needs, extreme weather conditions, and increasing demand for exports through the Gulf Coast region. Storage will play a significant role in helping to stabilize and balance the variability of the fluctuating demand. The ability to store gas in excess of current demand allows the supply of gas to be stored until times of peak demand occur.

The primary goal of the proposed expansion of storage at Pine Prairie is to provide greater supply flexibility to utilities, industrial customers, and downstream customers. Additionally, the expansion could help maintain price stability during times of system stress and potentially mitigate some of the risks associated with short-term disruptions to the system.

Since Pine Prairie is located close to both significant sources of production and significant consumption areas, the incremental storage capacity at this location has the potential to affect markets far beyond Louisiana.

This is not an instant solution

Like many large storage projects, the proposed expansion of storage at Pine Prairie is moving at a deliberate pace. The outcome of the expansion will depend upon the results of the regulatory review, environmental assessment, and stakeholder involvement. If approved, the project will incrementally add capacity to the system over time and not contribute to an immediate change in market fundamentals.
