Companies that are able to deliver energy projects centered on a variety of energy sources increase their chances of being appointed to spearhead notable projects and, in turn, improve their overall portfolio. As the year is coming to an end, there are many entities hoping to finish it off on a high note and carry that momentum forward into 2027. Ultimately, this increased urgency will help countries like the United States take a massive step toward reaching the clean energy targets that they set for themselves when the clean energy transition began. Recently, Cargill added an 87 MW South Dakota wind deal and an 85 MW Oklahoma solar project, stretching its U.S. renewable portfolio across two more states.

Cargill improves its reputation and portfolio after announcing two massive projects

It is interesting to witness the number of external companies that have become involved in clean energy projects as they aim to secure reliable clean energy for many more years to come. Cargill is a company that is dedicated to providing food, ingredients, agricultural solutions, and industrial products to nourish the world in a safe, responsible, and sustainable way.

Sitting at the heart of the supply chain, the company is partnering with farmers and customers to source, make, and deliver products that are seen as essential for living. Because of the industry in which the company operates, it is important that it has a consistent energy supply so that it can continue providing for its customers.

A press release from Cargill announced that the company is expanding its renewable energy portfolio in the United States through solar and wind projects that are located in Oklahoma and South Dakota.

By focusing on regions where it operates, the company is working to eliminate emissions from how food is produced and processed while supporting more resilient and efficient operations. Cargill has entered into a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 87 megawatts (MW) of wind power from the Sweetland Wind project in South Dakota.

The 12.6-year agreement is expected to generate an estimated 392,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually, supporting a reduction of an estimated 162,000 metric tons (MT) of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year from Cargill’s operations. The company deserves tremendous credit for investing in initiatives that will assist the United States in meeting its clean energy targets.

Cargill has executed a long-term VPPA for the full output of the 85 MW Choctaw Fields Solar project in Oklahoma. The project started commercial operation in August 2026 and is expected to reduce an estimated 1.30 million MT of CO2e emissions over the life of the agreement.

Notably, the two projects are expected to support an estimated 3.3 million MT of emissions reductions over the contract terms. The two projects are both located within the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), a regional grid that is serving much of the central United States. This includes states where Cargill operates large facilities that produce and process products such as beef, sweeteners, and food ingredients.

The significance of Cargill’s energy project to clean energy development

Cargill is in a good position as it aims to establish itself as a pioneer within solar and wind energy generation. Christina Yagjian, senior director of global renewable energy at Cargill, stated the following:

“Our customers are looking for ways to reduce emissions from the products they source from us, and we’re partnering closely with them to support their goals. By expanding renewable electricity in the regions where we operate, we can connect our energy sourcing more directly to the products and ingredients we supply to our customers.”

Cargill has 155K+ employees who innovate with purpose, providing customers with life’s essentials so businesses can grow, communities can prosper, and consumers live well. After the company’s latest initiative, it is set to receive new attention, especially from energy industry experts.
