The energy industry goes through different phases where a certain component solves all the problems that developers are facing meaning it becomes a mainstay. Companies have for a long time been trying to overcome the intermittency issues associated with solar and wind energy initiatives but this has proven to be quite difficult. In the contemporary era, the high expertise and technological innovation allowed developers to rely on battery storage systems to maintain consistent electricity availability rather than solely prioritizing generation. On that note, Avangrid advanced plans for an 82-MWh standalone battery energy storage project in Oregon.

A background overview of Avangrid as a dominant player in the energy sector

Avangrid is a company that many energy industry enthusiasts would have encountered at some point considering how active it is. It is a leading energy company headquartered in the United States and aiming to meet the growing demand for energy homes and businesses across the nation through service, innovation, and continued investments.

Owing to its longevity in the energy industry, Avangrid now has offices in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and Oregon. Additionally, it has operations across 25 states with an approximate amount of $50 billion in assets. The company currently owns and operates about seven electric and natural gas utilities.

In New York and New England, it serves a total amount of more than 3.4 million customers. One of the most obvious signs of a company’s success is just how much energy capacity it holds. According to reports, Avangrid operates 100 energy generation facilities that all have a capacity of more than 11 Gigawatts which is sufficient to power 3 million homes.

Delving deeper into Avangrid’s 82 MWh standalone battery energy storage project in Oregon

Not for the first time in 2026, Avangrid is in the headlines for a groundbreaking energy development. The company announced that it will build a battery energy storage project in Gilliam County, Oregon known as Shutler Energy Storage. There has been great excitement surrounding this announcement even though the project has not yet materialized.

The reason behind this is that Avangrid has a good reputation of consistently delivering projects that elevate the United State’s energy landscape. The Shutler Energy Storage is set to be a 41 Megawatt/82 Megawatt-hour facility that enhances reliability and resilience across Avangrid’s 3GW portfolio in the Pacific Northwest.

Avangrid is also expected to donate $110,000 per year on behalf of the project to two Gilliam County non-profit organizations to support early childhood education and childcare. Following the announcement, Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda stated the following:

“Shutler Energy Storage reflects Avangrid’s long-term commitment to Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. This project adds a flexible resource that will strengthen grid reliability, support good‑paying jobs, and help ensure the energy we generate is available when communities need it most.”

Understanding the expected impacts of the Shutler Energy Storage

Although the facility has not yet been completed, this does not stop the general public from looking forward to the benefits that the facility might bring. Avangrid is of the belief that Shutler Energy Storage gives the company another way through which it can manage its regional portfolio thus improving how it coordinates across its generating assets.

Reports state that Avangrid will contribute $55,000 to Condon Early Learning Center and $55,000 to Arlington Childcare Center each year for the life of the project. It is interesting to witness Avangrid growing beyond just an energy focused entity to serving the community financially.

Looking ahead at the logistics and location of Avangrid’s upcoming facility

Shutler Energy Storage is set to be located near two existing Avangrid facilities and a third one which is currently under construction. This means the company will be able to rely upon the resources which it already has.

The new energy storage will operate as a large power bank which has the ability to discharge 41 MW for two hours. One discharge is sufficient to power roughly 3,000 homes.
