Entergy Texas just flipped the switch on its 1,215-megawatt Orange County Advanced Power Station, adding a new round-the-clock power source to Southeast Texas. The plant can power more than 230,000 homes — and it’s projected to save customers over $1 billion through lower fuel and operating costs down the line.

Entergy Texas activates Orange County advanced power station

It’s official: the Orange County Advanced Power Station, known as OCAPS, is fully operational and pushing power into the Southeast Texas grid. The 1,215-megawatt facility caps off a years-long development push designed to keep pace with the region’s rising energy demands.

With enough capacity to power more than 230,000 homes, OCAPS ranks among the more significant additions to the regional grid in recent years. It runs continuously — not as a backup or occasional resource, but as a steady baseline of generation that the region can actually count on.

One new power plant addresses part of that challenge, but Entergy Texas is signaling clearly that OCAPS is one piece of a larger puzzle — not the whole picture.

Entergy Texas CEO David Borde kept his framing simple. “Our customers count on us to power critical parts of their everyday lives, and OCAPS helps us deliver even more of the safe and reliable power they deserve in a cost-effective manner,” he said. For Borde, the plant represents both a major operational milestone and a long-term commitment to the communities Entergy Texas serves.

Combined-cycle technology drives efficiency and cost savings

What sets OCAPS apart from older plants is its combined-cycle design. Conventional power plants waste a substantial portion of their fuel’s energy as heat that simply escapes into the air. Combined-cycle plants capture that heat and put it back to work generating more electricity — more output from the same fuel burn.

That efficiency hits your bill directly. In Texas, fuel costs pass straight through to customers, so burning less fuel per megawatt-hour means ratepayers pay less. Over time, that’s projected to exceed $1 billion in total savings through reduced fuel and operating expenses.

The design also gives grid operators real flexibility — output can be ramped up or down quickly to match demand. That responsiveness matters most when a summer heat wave or a winter freeze sends consumption surging, helping stabilize the grid without leaning on more expensive peaking resources.

Construction generated $1.8 billion in economic activity and 7,000-plus jobs

Even before OCAPS produced its first megawatt, it was already making an impact. Building the facility generated roughly $1.8 billion in economic activity across the region and supported more than 7,000 direct jobs during construction — numbers that carried real weight for the Golden Triangle area long before the plant ever came online.

Orange Mayor Larry Spears Jr. was direct about why local leaders see OCAPS as more than a power plant. “It’s the kind of investment that helps a community keep moving forward, gives businesses confidence to grow and creates opportunities for the people who call this place home,” he said.

Spears also pointed to the plant’s value when things get rough. Southeast Texas sits squarely in Gulf Coast hurricane territory and has absorbed damaging winter storms in recent years. A large, reliable generation source nearby, he suggested, puts the community in a stronger position when those events hit.

OCAPS fits into Entergy Texas’ broader Southeast Texas energy plan

OCAPS didn’t come together in isolation. It’s part of a wider strategic framework Entergy Texas calls the Southeast Texas Energy Plan — marketed as STEP Ahead — which bundles multiple infrastructure investments aimed at modernizing and expanding the regional grid.

The broader plan goes beyond generation. New and upgraded transmission infrastructure are included, along with other improvements designed to make the overall system more resilient against both steady demand growth and the stress of extreme weather events.

That growth pressure is real. Southeast Texas is seeing rapid population increases and expanding industrial activity, both of which push electricity demand higher. One new power plant addresses part of that challenge, but Entergy Texas is signaling clearly that OCAPS is one piece of a larger puzzle — not the whole picture.

What the Orange County plant means for Southeast Texas

A few threads are worth keeping in mind. A large, efficient power plant is now online, capable of serving more than 230,000 homes around the clock. Its combined-cycle design is expected to cut fuel consumption and pass those savings to customers, with projections pointing to over $1 billion in total savings over time.

Construction delivered $1.8 billion in regional economic activity and more than 7,000 jobs before the plant generated a single megawatt. Local leaders see the facility as both a buffer against extreme weather and a signal to businesses that the region’s infrastructure is keeping pace with growth — two things that tend to matter a great deal in communities still rebuilding from past storms.

For Entergy Texas, OCAPS marks one important checkpoint in a multi-investment strategy. The STEP Ahead plan keeps rolling out additional generation capacity and transmission upgrades across Southeast Texas, all aimed at building a grid that’s ready for whatever demand and weather throw at it next.
