The clean energy transition has unveiled the enormous number of external companies that are involved in ensuring that projects are executed successfully in the energy industry. While the focus is mostly on investors and energy companies, there are still engineering companies involved in the building of facilities. The hydrogen sector has become one of the most important ones for most countries as they work toward achieving their clean energy targets within the provided timeline. As of late, Jacobs extends its role on a German steelmaking project designed to run on hydrogen, keeping the engineering firm at the center of the plant’s low-carbon overhaul.

Jacobs makes another massive contribution to the clean energy industry

Jacobs is an entity that is respected for its strong focus on using today to reinvent tomorrow, delivering results and solutions for the world’s most complicated challenges. With an estimated $12 billion in annual revenue and a team of roughly 47000, it provides end-to-end services in advanced manufacturing, cities and places, energy, environmental, life sciences, transportation, and water.

From advisory and consulting to feasibility, planning, and lifecycle management, the entity is creating a more connected and sustainable world. Jacobs was founded in 1947 by Dr. Joseph Jacobs and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, United States. Companies that manage to survive multiple generations of the energy industry usually have the ability to adapt to the newest ways of executing projects.

According to a press release from Jacobs, the company was officially selected to extend its role on thyssenkrupp Steel’s direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Germany, continuing to provide project management office (PMO), construction management, and assembly management services as the hydrogen-capable facility moves toward first iron production.

This announcement serves as confirmation that Jacobs has been doing an impeccable job at the Duisburg-based plant, which has led to its position being extended for another lengthy period. There will be many other companies within the energy industry assessing Jacobs’ achievement and its rapidly improving portfolio in assisting developers with their initiatives.

Jacobs was first awarded the program and construction management contract in August 2023 and is expected to continue coordinating design, logistics and construction. Industry experts believe that the outcome from this initiative will determine many countries’ approach to executing hydrogen-based projects. When complete, the plant is expected to produce an estimated 2.5 million metric tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) a year, replacing coal-powered blast furnaces with a hydrogen-based process.

An overview of Germany’s overall hydrogen energy sector as of 2026

Germany is establishing a massive Hydrogen Core Network with pipelines starting operations to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. The nation’s 2030 goals involve 10 GW of domestic electrolyzer capacity to meet an estimated hydrogen demand of 95 to 130 terawatt-hours (TWh).

The country expects to import an estimated 50% to 70% of its total hydrogen supply via ships and international pipelines. It focuses deployment mainly on hard-to-electrify heavy industries (such as steel and chemical) and heavy-duty transport.

The significance of Jacobs extending its role in the German steelmaking project

The parties involved in the project recognize the importance of having Jacobs as a part of its plans, considering the amount of progress that has been made since 2023. Jacobs Executive Vice President Fiachra O’ Cleirigh stated the following after the announcement was made:

“This contract amendment and extension reflects the trust thyssenkrupp has in our team to bring this complex, first-of-its-kind hydrogen-based iron making facility online. We’re focused on delivering this project to support the shift toward climate-neutral steelmaking and deliver on our promise of a more connected, sustainable world.”

Because of the company’s success in planning, designing, and delivering critical infrastructure, water management systems, and advanced technology projects, Jacobs has become one of the most valuable companies in the energy industry, as it helps companies achieve their desired targets.
