The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is reaching a tipping point. Kazakhstan has raised concerns over the security of its energy infrastructure following a recent drone attack on its oil tankers in the Black Sea. Subsequently, the nation has called for stronger safeguards on major oil export corridors in the region as the war in Ukraine shows no signs of ending in the near future. Kazakhstan is a major oil supplier to the European continent and has become strategically important to the energy security of the bloc.

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lamented the latest attacks on oil tankers in the Black Sea

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan announced in a recent statement that on January 13, 2026, three oil tankers in the Black Sea were attacked by Ukrainian unmanned drones, raising concerns over energy security and posing a new threat to maritime safety in the region.

The three tankers were en route to the marine terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) before being attacked by the drones. According to authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all three vessels held the necessary permits and were equipped with the required standard identification systems.

Officials noted that no casualties were reported, although all three vessels suffered significant damage during the drone attack. Following the incidents, government officials from Kazakhstan held emergency consultations with several government representatives from European nations, as well as a few officials from the United States.

Kazakhstan has become a major exporter of oil for the European continent, fast becoming the number three oil supplier to the continent. According to data from Eurostat, Kazakhstan comes in as the third major supplier of oil to Europe after Norway and the United States.

“Kazakhstan plays a crucial role for Europe’s energy security and has been for years a reliable partner in diversifying energy sources and ensuring a stable supply for European markets. More than 12% of all the oil imported by the EU comes from Kazakhstan, contributing to the diversification of energy sources and reducing dependency on a limited number of suppliers. The continuous and safe functioning of the supply chain is hence key also for Europe.” – EU Spokesperson

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium is Kazakhstan’s main entry point into the European energy market

Due to the ongoing geopolitical tension between Russia and the litany of European nations, finding a solution that may enable a safer pathway for Kazakhstan to continue to supply oil to Europe is a top priority. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium is a major door that opens the European energy market to the oil supply from Kazakhstan.

With the EU outlining a new plan to eliminate the flow of Russian oil into the continent, the reality is that the war in Ukraine has placed the CPC in peril of not being able to safely supply Europe with the crude grade of oil that Kazakhstan has become known for. As the vast majority of European refineries rely on the grade of crude that Kazakhstan offers, the attacks on the CPC raise concerns for all European nations.

“Officials and analysts in Kazakhstan increasingly argue that Western partners have been insufficiently responsive to these concerns, even as Europe relies on Kazakh crude, making continued dependence on Russian transit a growing strategic contradiction.” – Laura Linderman, director of programs, Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, American Foreign Policy Council

Two European nations have provided a lifeline for Russian oil

With the latest attacks on the CPC fresh in the minds of the EU and Kazakhstan officials, Serbia and Hungary are preparing to construct a new oil pipeline in a cross-border project that provides a much-needed lifeline for Russian oil. The situation is on a knife-edge, and one wonders what the EU leaders will bring to the table as far as security concerns for Kazakhstan’s oil.
