Poland recently concluded its first contract for difference auction, and the results have seen the Baltica 9 offshore wind farm, along with two other significant wind energy projects, securing price support to develop the latest era of wind energy production in Poland. Europe has seen several nations offering new developments in clean energy generation that will reshape the global energy market over the coming years.
Poland is advancing the production of clean energy to reduce reliance on oil
Poland is just the latest in a long line of European nations that aim to end the generational reliance on oil and gas and instead focus on developing its renewable energy sector over the coming years. To do so, Poland recently concluded its first-ever contracts for difference auction.
Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office noted that the three projects will play a vital role in advancing the nation’s energy transition and have paved the path towards net-zero emissions. The three wind energy projects that were winning bidders are:
- The 975 MW capacity Baltica 9 project from Elektrownia Wiatrowa Baltica 9
- 1,560 MW Baltyk 1 project from MFW Baltyk 1
- 900 MW capacity Baltic East project from Orlen Neptun VIII
Participants in the contract for difference auction have been granted seven years to develop the aforementioned wind projects in Poland. After operations begin, the three wind projects will receive 25 years of financial support.
“The first auction for offshore wind energy in Poland is an event of major importance on the path of our country’s energy transition. The fact that it was successfully conducted gives me great satisfaction. The preparation and organisation of the offshore auction involved numerous challenges for the Office I am in charge of, operating in a complex and dynamically changing regulatory environment. This confirms the Regulator’s ability to support the strategic objectives of the state in the energy sector.” – Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office President Renata Mroczek
Trade associations have praised the successful CFD auction by Poland
Trade association WindEurope has lauded the successful CFD round by Poland, saying that the auction “marks the beginning of a new phase for Poland’s offshore wind sector”. Poland’s three new wind energy projects follow two other developments that were awarded outside of the CFD auction, namely Orsted and PGE’s 1.5 GW-capacity Baltica 2 project and Northland Power and ORLEN’s 1.1 GW Baltic Power wind farm.
WindEurope has added that the scale of investment in Poland’s wind energy market is substantial, and provides the basis for the nation to dramatically increase the energy output capacity from the renewable energy market. As Europe sees several new projects being developed this year in the wind energy market, the reality is that Europe is leading the energy transition to renewable energy.
The Italian Serra Palino and Venusia onshore wind projects are breaking ground this year, exemplifying the astonishing growth of the wind energy sector in Europe. Decarbonizing the international energy sector has become a necessity to alleviate concerns over climate change and develop a more open and transparent energy sector.
“If current momentum continues, Poland could reach 18 GW of offshore wind by 2040 and potentially exceed 30 GW by 2050. The Polish model, with its clear rules and long-term CfD support, is a stabilising force for the industry and a blueprint for other markets.” – WindEurope
Europe’s embrace of the wind energy market is a far cry from the US stance
While Poland is advancing its wind energy sector through the first-ever CFD auction, the United States is taking a far different approach to the wind power sector. Donald Trump’s administration has canceled permits for two new wind projects in Maryland and Massachusetts. The future of the global energy transition is dependent on whether more nations can embrace the potential of the renewable energy market.
