Swiss energy company Axpo officially inaugurated its first wind farm in Finland on June 8, marking a new chapter in the country’s push for renewable energy. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Lålax facility, located in the western municipality of Vörå, drew representatives from politics, local government, and the surrounding community — including Finland’s Minister for European Affairs, Joakim Strand, as guest of honor.
Axpo inaugurates Lålax wind farm in Vörå
The Lålax inauguration is a notable milestone for Axpo in northern Europe. The ceremony took place in Vörå, a municipality in Finland’s Ostrobothnia region, bringing together politicians, local authority officials, and community members. Minister Joakim Strand — who holds responsibility for European Affairs and Ownership Steering in the Finnish government — served as guest of honor, a signal of the project’s significance at the national level.
For Axpo, the day represented more than a local ribbon-cutting. Lålax is the company’s first onshore wind farm in Finland, and the event underlined what the Swiss energy group describes as a clear commitment to the Finnish energy market.
Technical specifications and construction timeline
The Lålax facility is built around four Vestas wind turbines, each rated at 6.2 MW, with a hub height of 440 feet rising above the flat Ostrobothnian landscape. Together they deliver a total installed capacity of 24.8 MW.
Construction moved quickly. The project broke ground and reached technical commissioning in September 2025 — just eleven months after work began — reflecting careful pre-construction planning and efficient on-site execution. Once generated, the electricity travels through a dedicated substation and into the national transmission grid, where Axpo Nordic handles the commercial side, marketing the power on the exchange.
Projected output and contribution to Finland’s climate targets
The numbers behind Lålax are straightforward but meaningful. The farm’s projected annual production sits at approximately 70 million kilowatt-hours — enough to supply around 5,400 Finnish single-family homes with clean electricity each year.
Finland has set one of the most demanding climate targets in the world, legally committed to reaching climate neutrality by 2035. Every new renewable project helps close the gap between current energy output and that legal obligation. Lålax also reinforces Ostrobothnia’s growing reputation as a hub for renewable energy development; the region’s geography and wind resources make it a natural fit, and projects like this one help consolidate that position.
Axpo’s expansion plans and Volkswind expertise
Axpo is not treating Lålax as a one-off. Klaus Heckenberger, head of Axpo’s Wind Division and CEO of Volkswind, described the farm as “the starting point for what lies ahead,” pointing to a project pipeline the company has built up in Finland over recent years.
That pipeline draws on substantial experience. Volkswind became part of the Axpo Group in 2015, bringing a track record built across Germany and France — around 100 wind farms in those two countries, totaling over 1,600 MW of installed capacity. That expertise is now being applied to the Finnish market.
The Lålax project was delivered by a local team based in Vaasa, the regional capital of Ostrobothnia. Axpo Renewable Finland Managing Director Joakim Ingves highlighted the team’s work as central to the project’s success, also acknowledging the broader network of partners involved. For the municipality of Vörå, the investment carries practical weight: Jan Finne, the municipality’s chief executive, welcomed the cooperation with Axpo and described the wind farm as an important step in the community’s development, contributing to a more sustainable and secure energy supply.
5,400 Finnish homes covered
Lålax is a 24.8 MW wind farm comprising four Vestas turbines, technically commissioned in September 2025 after eleven months of construction. It is Axpo’s first onshore wind farm in Finland and is expected to produce around 70 million kilowatt-hours annually — enough to cover the electricity needs of approximately 5,400 Finnish homes.
The project feeds into Finland’s legally binding 2035 climate neutrality target and strengthens Ostrobothnia as a renewable energy region. Axpo has signaled that Lålax is the beginning of a wider Finnish expansion, backed by the wind development experience Volkswind has accumulated across more than 100 projects in Germany and France.
