RWE begins construction of 236 MW battery storage facility at Germany’s Hambach mine site

RWE has broken ground on a large-scale battery storage facility at the Hambach open-pit mine near Niederzier, in Germany’s Düren district. Preparatory work began at the end of 2025, and the first of 128 lithium-ion battery containers has already arrived on the 7.4-acre site. The project will deliver 236 MW of capacity and 470 MWh of storage, with commissioning targeted for 2027.

Work on the 7.4-acre site kicked off at the end of 2025, and construction is moving. The first lithium-ion battery containers — part of a total of 128 — have already landed on-site near Niederzier in the Düren district.

When it’s done, the facility will carry a rated capacity of 236 MW and a storage capacity of 470 MWh — a meaningful buffer for the German grid. Commercial commissioning is scheduled for 2027, giving RWE roughly two years to bring all 128 containers online and tie everything into the wider grid infrastructure.

Closer to Hambach, RWE is also building a 14.8 MWac solar park at the nearby Manheimer Bucht development area, paired with an 80 MWh battery storage facility.

Why RWE chose the former open-pit mine for battery storage

Hambach wasn’t a random pick. The open-pit mine has been winding down lignite extraction, freeing up large parcels of land that no longer serve their original purpose. That available space, combined with the region’s solid existing grid connections, makes it a practical fit for large-scale energy infrastructure.

Thomas Körber, a member of the RWE Power Executive Board responsible for lignite, put it plainly: “The Rhineland mining region remains an energy hub, and that is good news. In addition to renewable energy plants, we are building storage facilities on open-pit mining areas that are no longer needed.”

The site already has a clean energy track record. RWE has previously commissioned three solar power plants at Hambach with a combined capacity of around 50 MWac, and a smaller integrated battery unit—rated at 4.1 MW and 8.1 MWh—is already running there too. The new 236 MW facility will dwarf that earlier installation by a wide margin.

Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation, pointed to the location’s position “in the heart of the Rhineland mining region” as offering ideal conditions for grid-scale storage—a nod to the dense transmission infrastructure still running through the area from its decades as a major power-generation zone.

Grid-stabilization role and technical functions of the facility

Battery storage at this scale isn’t just about holding electricity in reserve. The Hambach facility is specifically designed to respond to grid fluctuations in fractions of a second—a function that gets more critical as variable renewables make up a larger share of the generation mix.

Wind and solar output shifts constantly with weather. Without fast-responding storage to absorb or release power on demand, those swings can destabilize grid frequency. A large battery system reacts far faster than a conventional gas or coal plant, making it a practical tool for keeping the grid balanced in real time.

The facility is also designed to provide balancing energy services to the German grid, a formal market mechanism that grid operators use to correct supply-demand imbalances. RWE has built in capacity for future grid-support services as well, including inertia provision, which helps stabilize grid frequency over slightly longer timescales.

Valerius described the storage system as “a powerful partner for wind and solar power,” underlining that its primary role is to complement variable renewable output rather than operate independently.

RWE’s broader battery storage expansion in Germany and globally

Hambach is one piece of a much larger buildout. In Germany alone, RWE says it’s currently constructing approximately 1.7 GW of battery storage capacity — and Hambach’s 236 MW represents a meaningful share of that pipeline.

Globally, the numbers are bigger still. RWE already operates 1.7 GW of battery storage capacity worldwide and has a further 2.5 GW under construction across international markets. The company is active in battery storage development in the United States, Europe, and Australia, treating it as a core part of its growth strategy.

At 236 MW / 470 MWh, it’ll rank among the larger battery installations in the country when it comes online in 2027.

Existing grid connections and available land made the site a logical choice. The facility will provide fast-response grid balancing, balancing energy services, and future inertia support, sitting alongside solar plants and a smaller battery unit already operating at Hambach.

For RWE, the project reflects a broader strategic shift. With 1.7 GW already operating globally and another 2.5 GW under construction, the company is betting heavily on battery storage as a long-term growth pillar — in Germany and well beyond.
