When redevelopment of mature offshore oil fields finally commences after many years of review and analysis, there is often increased scrutiny on how those offshore fields were reviewed, assessed, and evaluated over time within their respective operators’ portfolios. Such scrutiny often centers on technical and operational decisions.
The Wassana field within Valeura’s offshore portfolio
The Wassana field, located offshore in the Gulf of Thailand, is operated by Valeura, which has a 100% working interest in License G10/48. Historically, the field has been produced through the use of mobile production units with limited drilling radii and processing capacities. Both the production rates of the field, as well as the ultimate recovery factor (URF), have been impacted by these restrictions.
Mobile Production Units allow for the continued operation of a producing field; however, they limit the efficiency of accessing the remaining hydrocarbon resources. A major limitation for mature fields is that the use of mobile production units reduces both drilling flexibility and processing capabilities, thereby limiting the opportunity to develop parts of the resource base.
Following Valeura’s assumption of Operatorship, additional technical evaluations were conducted on the Wassana Field. Valeura indicated that ongoing assessments provided additional insight into the limitations associated with utilizing the existing facilities to produce the field and identified several opportunities that could not be effectively developed without changing the infrastructure and layout of the Wassana Field.
Infrastructure expansion and development scope
A Final Investment Decision (FID) was made by Valeura to undertake a redevelopment of the Wassana field focused on installing a new Central Processing Platform. The new platform is designed to replace the existing production arrangement and facilitate a more integrated development of the license area by providing enhanced drilling capabilities and improved oil and fluids processing capabilities.
Valeura stated that the redevelopment concept selected is an optimized design that provides maximum oil recovery throughout the entire block. The increased drilling radius and processing capabilities of the new platform are expected to provide access to reserves that had previously been restricted due to infrastructure limitations. Additionally, operational flexibility during future development phases is anticipated to be improved.
The redevelopment plan demonstrates a transition from incremental optimization toward a more comprehensive field development strategy. This shift enables long‑term production objectives to be aligned with subsurface potential and the configuration of surface facilities. The revised development strategy is expected to support longer‑term planning rather than remaining constrained by short‑term infrastructure limitations.
Production forecast and reserves impact
According to Valeura, First Oil is expected from the new Wassana Field configuration in Q‑2, 2027. Peak production from the Wassana field is projected at approximately 10,000 bpd, which represents a significant increase from current production rates based upon the existing infrastructure.
Valeura noted that Proved Plus Probable (2P) reserves at the Wassana field have increased to 20.5 million barrels of oil (MMbbl) following the redevelopment study. An estimated 18 MMbbl incremental increase versus continuing to utilize existing infrastructure was added via this redevelopment. In addition, the redevelopment is expected to extend the field’s End‑of‑Field Life to 2043, or approximately 16 years beyond current expectations.
These results demonstrate how infrastructure decisions can directly influence both recoverable volumes and project duration in offshore environments. Mature basins present unique challenges that often require customized development techniques to access remaining resources.
Redevelopment and Valeura’s offshore Thailand strategy
By making a final investment decision on the Wassana field redevelopment, Valeura has moved beyond the operational constraints imposed by aging infrastructure and established a clearer pathway offshore Thailand. Through new processing facilities, extended field life, and improved production capacity, the Wassana field has been positioned as a more resilient, strategically important component within Valeura’s offshore Thailand portfolio.
