Urenco USA starts up a sixth enrichment cascade in New Mexico as its expansion project passes the 75% completion mark
The United States deserves tremendous credit for the way it has diversified the energy portfolio of every state and ensured that there is a consistent energy supply everywhere. The U.S. government has worked well with private companies to ensure that projects are executed at a rapid pace and that there are no massive restrictions that deter developers from achieving success in the projects that they pursue. The nation fully understands that the projects that materialize allow it to take a massive stride toward reaching the clean energy targets set for itself. Interestingly, the U.S. is willing to embrace foreign entities if it means they can bring captivating facilities. As of late, Urenco USA started up a sixth enrichment cascade in New Mexico as its expansion project passes the 75% completion mark.
Urenco USA seeks to establish itself among the pioneers of the nuclear sector
The United States falls behind China in the generation of wind and solar energy. Still, the nation prioritizes the position that it holds in nuclear energy generation, as it has dominated for many decades. As America’s only commercial-scale producer of enriched uranium, Urenco USA operates the National Enrichment Facility, a strategic part of America’s energy infrastructure and nuclear fuel supply chain that started operations in 2010.
The facility’s existing annual capacity of 4.3 million SWU can meet roughly one-third of current U.S. demand for low-enriched uranium. According to reports, there are more than 500 U.S. employees and long-term contractors who work at the site.
Urenco USA starts up a sixth enrichment cascade in New Mexico as its expansion project advances
A recent press release from Urenco USA announced that the company has officially started production in its sixth cascade of new U.S. uranium enrichment capacity at the National Enrichment facility. This is a massive moment for the company as it looks to continue the momentum that it has enjoyed in nuclear project execution.
With over two decades of experience building and operating uranium enrichment capacity in the United States, Urenco USA is in a good position to support U.S. utilities in meeting growing domestic energy demands and enhancing U.S. energy security. Companies like Urenco USA are seen as being responsible for shaping the future of clean energy generation, especially as technology is now influencing developers’ approach to projects.
An overview of how Urenco USA has maintained momentum in its projects
Urenco USA has established blueprints that upcoming energy companies can adopt in their projects in the hopes of achieving as much success as the company has. Since its first product shipment in 2012, the company has delivered every customer order on time and to specification, representing more than 50 million SWU of production.
As there is a growing amount of interest in U.S. nuclear power capacity, Urenco USA’s expansion of its domestic enrichment capacity will assist in ensuring a long-term, reliable supply of fuel for current and future U.S. reactors, supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s objectives to accelerate deployment of new domestic capacity.
A strong finish: New Mexico receives a huge boost from Urenco USA
Many companies are aiming to finish 2026 on a high note and carry that momentum into 2027, and Urenco USA has just achieved this as well. After the project’s announcement, Jody Blackshear, Managing Director of Urenco USA, stated the following:
“We are consistently delivering new capacity to help fuel the U.S. nuclear industry and allied nations, and our teams are doing it ahead of schedule and on budget. This experience will support our larger capacity programs in the years ahead as we look to increase our enrichment production by more than 50% to meet the needs of our customers with traditional and advanced reactors.”
Urenco USA is currently working on the installation of 700,000 separative work units (SWU) of new capacity between 2025 and 2027. The company also expects to install the seventh cascade later this year and the final cascade in the spring of 2027.
