As the global energy sector is embroiled in the inevitable transition away from the fossil fuel sector towards the renewable energy market, a new report from WindEurope has detailed the 11.3 GW of new wind turbine orders during the first half of 2025, pointing to the increased reliance being placed on the wind power sector globally. The greatest minds throughout history have urged the need to diversify the energy sector through innovative wind power projects that strengthen the sector while phasing out the conventional non-renewable energy sector.
Europe has lofty ambitions to expand the wind power sector by the end of the decade
As the world grapples with the inevitable transition away from the traditional energy sector in favor of the renewable power that wind and solar present, a new report from WindEurope has detailed the substantial increase in wind turbine orders during the first half of the year.
The organization regularly reports on the progress being made in the wind power sector in Europe, which has seen more and more nations turning to the untapped potential that wind power presents. It noted that Europe now has 291 GW of wind power capacity, with 254 GW onshore and 37 GW offshore.
The EU-27, which is the 27 member states that form part of the European Union after the UK pulled out in 2020, has 236 GW of wind power capacity. The report from WindEurope notes that the European Union is expected to build 22 GW of new wind farms annually from 2025 to 2030.
That would take its cumulative installed capacity to 344 GW, although it should be noted that the EU has plans to increase that capacity to 425 GW by the end of the decade.

Europe took $39 billion of Final Investment Decisions in new wind farms in H1 2025
The proclivity that Europe has for wind power is evident in the billions of Final Investment Decisions in new wind farms during the first half of the year. The current amount that has been invested this year has already surpassed the total investment in 2024.
During the first half of 2025, WindEurope reported that Europe ordered 11.3 GW of new wind turbines, which is 19% higher than in 2024. That 11.3 GW is divided by 8.8 GW onshore and 2.5 GW offshore.
The governments of Europe have approved 11.7 GW of new wind capacity in auctions in H1 2025: 10.7 GW onshore and 1 GW offshore. This exemplifies the progress that has been made in adopting wind power in Europe’s electricity grid. While nations like Australia see huge wind projects being suspended, Europe remains the cornerstone of the renewable energy sector.
Even some actors and celebrities have given their opinion on the wind power sector, especially in places where the sector is lacking, like the United States.

Despite the recent reports that state that Europe hit record wind power curtailments in the first nine months of 2025, the 11.3 GW of new wind turbine orders point to a possible resurrection of the sector on the continent. The indignant nature of the energy sector has resulted in several nations stagnating the adoption of the wind power sector. While the United States rolls back any progress in the sector through the removal of regulatory barriers for the coal and gas sectors, wind is quietly waiting for its chance to dominate the global energy sector.
