Projects are continuing to materialize at a rapid pace in the state of California, allowing it to solidify its place as a leading solar energy-producing state in the United States. The state is relying on a variety of companies to make projects a reality and continue enhancing the solar energy installed capacity. However, the nation is still pursuing different projects across different states in order to ensure that there is versatility in the amount of energy sources that a place has, especially during the clean energy transition. In the latest initiative, Fluence landed a contract to deliver an 800 MWh battery system for a solar-plus-storage project in California.

A general overview of Fluence as a leading solar energy-producing entity

Fluence is a global market leader delivering intelligent energy storage and optimization software for renewables and storage. The company’s solutions and operational services are playing a significant role in creating a more resilient grid, from powering the next generation of AI-driven data centers to unlocking the full potential of renewable portfolios.

As there are now multiple gigawatts of projects successfully contracted, deployed, and under management across almost 50 markets, the company is shaping the future energy generation strategies.

In 2018, Siemens and AES combined their energy storage teams to establish Fluence. Their partnership brought Siemens’ grid technology and AES’s real-world power plant experience to establish a company that is focused on scaling battery storage. The entity is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.

It is more difficult for companies operating in the contemporary landscape to receive contracts and tenders that allow them to spearhead projects. This is largely because of the wealth and access to resources that most companies have, allowing them to produce captivating projects. However, governments are still factoring into account the reputation and proven records of companies’ ability to execute projects.

Fluence recently announced that it has reached an agreement with Avantus to provide its advanced Smartstack™ energy storage solution and turnkey Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for the Rexford 2 project. Avantus is a well-respected developer and independent power producer that focuses on utility-scale solar and energy storage infrastructure in the Western United States.

The entity was initially founded in 2009 and has gone through rebranding to reach its current position. Its collaboration with Fluence in this instance could lead to groundbreaking projects that transform the solar landscape. The Rexford 2 will be located in Tulare County, California, and includes a 200 MW/800 MWh battery energy storage system paired with a solar facility.

Breaking down the Fluence and Avantus partnership for the Rexford 2 project

When two entities decide to combine for the execution of a project, it is important that they effectively complement each other and bring their best resources to the table. In this instance, Fluence will deploy its 4-hour-duration Smartstack™ system, integrating U.S. domestic content. The system will use Fluence’s network of partner manufacturing facilities in a variety of states.

Among the states included are Utah, South Carolina, and Texas, where essential components such as battery cells, modules, enclosures, and thermal management systems are produced. Through relying on this U.S.-based manufacturing network, the project will support the ongoing advancement of domestic energy storage technology.

Looking ahead: Is Fluence set to become one of the pioneers in solar?

When an entity lands a contractual agreement in the modern environment, there is an immediate feeling of excitement. John Zahurancik, Chief Customer Success Officer at Fluence, stated the following:

“Delivering a project of this magnitude requires deep expertise to help ensure long-term performance. By combining our end-to-end EPC capabilities with our advanced, U.S.-built Smartstack solution, we are streamlining deployment for Avantus. We are proud to leverage our proven track record.”

Residents of California are anticipating more clean energy supply. When operational, the project will deliver firm, on-demand capacity to the California grid, which is sufficient to power 84,000 Southern California homes with clean, reliable energy.
