Spain exemplifies this, and has even established an updated National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan.

By 2030, the nation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 32% compared to 1990 levels.

In addition to this, power generation from renewables must scale to 81%.

Billions of dollars have been invested in this green mission, with solar energy set to take the lead.

So far, Spain’s installed photovoltaic capacity has exceeded 50 gigawatts.

Unfortunately, the remaining gap is difficult to bridge.

There are certain industries that are inherently difficult to decarbonize.

This includes agri-food processing and manufacturing, which need intense thermal energy for its operations.

Beyond this, utility-scale solar expansion requires vast expanses of flat land.

This has led to immense friction with Spain’s agricultural sector.

Local clean energy versus food production

Solar and battery storage systems are expanding across Spain.

While it is vital to meet national clean energy goals, it also creates direct conflict with the Spanish agri-food industry.

The agricultural sector is a cornerstone of Spain’s economy.

It generates an annual turnover of more than $168 billion, driving roughly 20% of total national merchandise exports.

The agri-food industry consists of approximately 30,000 local businesses, which support nearly 560,000 direct jobs.

This means agriculture is a core pillar of rural employment across many historic farming regions, including Andalusia.

Now, major solar plants are being constructed to meet the rising demands of major tech moguls.

This creates direct competition between renewable developers and agricultural producers over flat, sunlit terrain.

Orchards and arable acreage are often cleared and converted into solar farms, displacing crop production and dividing centuries-old supply chains.

To address this, the Greening Group developed a system that produces clean energy without disrupting agricultural production.

Towering solar panels in Vilches olive grove

Developers worldwide are now promoting solar growth through agrivoltaics development projects.

In the province of Jaén within Andalusia, Vilches has become host to such an innovative dual-use system.

Roughly 12.4 acres of an olive grove were allocated to customized solar panels.

The olive grove is directly adjacent to an industrial packing plant of ACESUR, a major olive oil producer in Spain.

Combining clean power and agricultural production

More than 5,150 solar panels are mounted on steel structures over 13 feet high.

This height allows tall farming equipment, like a straddle harvester, to move freely underneath.

This design enables all of the existing olive trees to remain in production.

Furthermore, the 3.65 MWp solar array is paired with a 3 MWh battery storage system.

ACESUR’s packing facility can then generate and store clean power on site.

Roughly 95% of the facility’s industrial power demand is met this way, minimizing grid dependence.

Vilches’ agrivoltaic facility remains operational today and still successfully produces clean power.

Each year, thousands of carbon dioxide emissions are prevented by replacing fossil fuel-powered grid supplies with solar generation.

For Spain, it provides a valuable blueprint to harmonize its farming and clean energy sectors across future projects.

Ultimately, scaling agrivoltaic projects are key to achieving climate targets while preserving valuable agricultural practices and meeting rising energy demands.
