Solar Panels Winter

Regardless of which U.S. state you live in, we can all agree that electricity in the U.S. is quite expensive. Of course, prices may vary depending on where you live, but in general, investing in clean energy has never been more desirable than it is now. But with so many options to choose from, when are solar panels, for example, your best option? Well, if you live in a region with colder weather, your best option may be to invest in solar energy, as a PV expert believes that solar panels are more efficient in cold weather.

Investing in clean energy: Your options

The majority of Americans most likely got quite the fright when they opened their last utility bill, and things may not look up just yet this month. Beyond the fact that one’s heating and thus electricity bill skyrockets during the winter due to increased usage, other factors also play a significant role in driving up electricity prices.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the cost of electricity will continue to increase steadily due to:

  • Natural gas becoming more expensive
  • U.S. power grids aging rapidy, urgently requiring expensive upgrades
  • The grid is strained by AI and data centers

This is why investing in clean energy is becoming so desirable, as it not only saves you money but also ensures uninterrupted power. The majority of U.S. citizens favor solar power, and for good reason. If you live in a cold region prone to snow, it may even be your best option.

A PV expert believes that solar panels are more efficient in cold weather than in hot weather

Kristina Zagame, a PV expert, shared her insight on the usage of solar panels in the article “Do solar panels work in snow and during winter?” Zagame cleared the confusion experienced by some people who believe that solar panels are less efficient during winter or colder weather. Here are the facts:

  • Air temperature makes no difference to power output, only exposure to sunlight
  • Power output improves in colder weather, as solar panels operate extra efficiently during the limited daytime hours
  • Hotter temperatures (anything above 25°C/77°F) decrease output efficiency

She also points out that “lost output” during significant winter weather conditions is typically made up for during the longer summer days due to increased sun exposure, especially in the northern states. Most people still believe that wind turbines, such as the 4kW Hercules turbine for home use, are the best clean energy option for their homesteads, but the PV expert has other ideas.

5 reasons to invest in solar during the winter

Zagame points out that the best time to invest in solar panels for your home or small business is during the winter and shared five reasons why you should consider investing. The first and most obvious reason she already highlighted was:

“Solar panels are more efficient in colder weather than hot.”

The other reasons to invest in solar power during the winter include:

  1. Installation quotes are lower during the winter
  2. Incentive programmes for solar power are almost at capacity
  3. Cold-weather states usually have higher electricity prices, so you will have higher savings with solar
  4. Most installers prefer working in colder weather, as long as the roof is not covered in snow

Another great tip is to complete free registration on EnergySage Marketplace, as local installers will start bidding on special installation deals. You could end up saving over 20% on the installation of your solar system. So, with all that being said, we hope that you understand that it is merely a myth that solar panels are only efficient in hot weather. Even China is investing in solar production in snow, as the latest Chinese invention produces power even from raindrops.
